Writing Resources
The following is a collection of links I've found useful when writing, so I thought I'd post them here, just in case they might be a help...
I'd Like To Test That Theory The Giles Writer's Zone is a fantastic site with a wealth of info, essays and more. Dictionary.com Not just good for checking your spelling (since Word's spellchecker isn't always the sharpest crayon in the box), it also has a great Thesaurus. Buffyworld.com Contains transcripts of all eps of BtVS & Angel - very useful for verifying timelines and/or dialogue. 11 Rules of Writing A simple guide to avoiding some very common grammatical errors. The English-to-American Dictionary This very funny guide to British terminology is listed alphabetically, as well as by subject, for easy look-up. The Cascade Hospital This guide to ER care and other medical treatment was written specifically for use by fanfic writers. A Notorious Confusable Is it lay, lie, or laid? I can never remember 'em either - and check out the 'Guide' link at the bottom for a whole site full of helpful tips. How to Write Marginally Readable Fan Fiction Ms. Nitpicker's site is a brilliant help, as well as a hoot to read - have a giggle at her Hall of Shame. Ten Little Peeves A must-read for fic writers! Several of these have really stuck with me. Dr. Merlin's Guide to Fan Fiction Covers a variety of helpful fic topics, including "Who Is Mary Sue and Why Does She Have to Die?". The Mary Sue Litmus Test Original characters can be an intriguing X-factor in fanfic, but Mary Sue... still must die. Ashera's Glossary An exhaustive glossary of fanfic-related terms. Written for the Herc-Xenaverse but most translate to other genres as well. Witches' Voice Basic info on witchvox.com about Wicca, its holidays, basic tenets, etc. Minotaur's Tips for Slash Writers Haven't written any slash myself, but I thought this was a very thorough and thoughtful guide.
