Giles vs. Ethan
When Giles dropped out of Oxford at the age of 21 and fell in with the worst crowd that would have him, that crowd included Ethan Rayne. In Giles' words, "We practiced magicks. Small stuff for pleasure or gain. Then Ethan and I discovered something... bigger." They took turns being possessed by a demon named Eyghon, getting high off the rush it gave the host. But when their friend Randall lost control while possessed and became subsumed by the demon, the group's efforts to banish Eyghon failed, and Randall was killed.

Though he never said it implicitly, this experience may have been what finally convinced Giles to return to the Council. Ethan, on the other hand, embraced Chaos. It became his religion. And in S2 he decided to share that Chaos with the town of Sunnydale.

He would show up four times during the run of the show, each time bringing him up against his "old mate" Rupert, and each time showed us more about the man once hidden beneath all that tweed. No doubt, the energies of the Hellmouth helped draw Ethan to Sunnydale, but he clearly relished the chance to throw his old friend Ripper's life into Chaos.
